Transfer Students

Application for Transfer or Advanced Standing

Once a student enters medical school, it is expected that the individual has chosen a school where he/she will remain for completion of the entire undergraduate medical curriculum. However, circumstances may arise that cause an individual to seek a transfer to another medical school. A medical student has a right to apply for transfer from one medical school to another medical school (Guidelines for the Consideration of Application for Transfer or Advanced Standing | AAMC).

AUIS accepts applications from medical students with compelling reasons for transfer and recent course credits completed at schools listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (https://www.wdoms.org/). Our transfer students come from schools in the United States (MD and DO programs), Canada, and foreign medical schools from similar programs around the world. with or without government sponsorship. We accept transfer students in both our BMSc and MD programs during Years 1-3 ( Basic Sciences and Clinical Sciences) for review and placement during all 3 semesters each year in pre-medical sciences and basic sciences on the island campus. Clinical transfers are accepted year-round and are required to have passed the USMLE Step 1 prior to placement in clerkships.

All candidates must complete an online application and submit a personal statement, resume, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.

Sealed official transcripts must be sent to the University Admissions Department in Atlanta directly from all previous University programs attended; however, unofficial transcripts may be used for the academic review process while awaiting official documentation. The total number of course credits accepted by AUIS and placement in the program is determined by the Academic Admissions Committee after an individualized review and discussed with the applicant during the interview.

The exact courses for which transfer credit may be awarded will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the Dean of Academics or his/her designee.

Educational credentials of applicants who have completed coursework outside the US or Canada must be available to be evaluated on a course-by-course basis by a service that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES; www.naces.org).
